The North Node

The Moon’s North Node represents the psyche’s yearning for its destiny. Thus, it is associated with forward motion, development and the future. It is often said that the North Node points to the destiny of the astrological native. It may, therefore, symbolize that destiny. This is not necessarily the case, however. The Moon’s North Node may symbolize a feeling for one’s destiny or a desire for a particular destiny. It may also symbolize potential destiny.

As potential destiny, the North Node symbolizes that toward which the individual needs to move and, therefore, that which he/she needs to develop. Thus, the North Node may actually symbolize an area of weakness for the individual. As potential destiny, it is something that he/she needs to expend effort on in order to develop. It is likely to be “new territory” that may be difficult to blaze. Once the ground is broken, however, there may be a natural and magnetic attraction or an irresistible pull to meet and actualize the destiny that is symbolized by the North Node.

A planet conjuncting the North Node is likely to strengthen its significance for the psyche. This may also symbolize that the function represented by that planet needs to be strengthened and developed. Or, it may symbolize that the function is to play some other role in the realization of the individual’s destiny.

The transcendent dimension of the North Node points in a single direction—towards spiritual growth and development. This is often the most difficult course of destiny to follow. However, it is almost always rewarding and it has the potential to become that Ultimate Destiny from which there is no return.
